May God grant me to speak with judgment,
\nand to have thoughts worthy of what I have received;
\nfor he is the guide even of wisdom
\nand the corrector of the wise.
\nFor both we and our words are in his hand,
\nas are all understanding and skill in crafts.

\nFor wisdom is more mobile than any motion;
\nbecause of her pureness she pervades and penetrates all things.
\nFor she is a breath of the power of God,
\nand a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty;
\ntherefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her.
\nFor she is a reflection of eternal light,
\na spotless mirror of the working of God,
\nand an image of his goodness.
\nAlthough she is but one, she can do all things,
\nand while remaining in herself, she renews all things;
\nin every generation she passes into holy souls
\nand makes them friends of God, and prophets;
\nfor God loves nothing so much as the person who lives with wisdom.
\nShe is more beautiful than the sun,
\nand excels every constellation of the stars.
\nCompared with the light she is found to be superior,
\nfor it is succeeded by the night,
\nbut against wisdom evil does not prevail.

The professed aim of our philosophy; and the learning of these branches, when pursued with right course of conduct, leads through Wisdom, the artificer of all things, to the Ruler of all,\u2014a Being difficult to grasp and apprehend, ever receding and withdrawing from him who pursues. But He who is far off has\u2014oh ineffable marvel!\u2014come very near. \u201cI am a God that draws near,\u201d says the Lord. He is in essence remote; \u201cfor how is it that what is begotten can have approached the Unbegotten?\u201d But He is very near in virtue of that power which holds all things in its embrace. “Am I a God near by, says the Lord, and not a God far off? Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them? says the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? says the Lord.” (Jer. 23:23-24)For the power of God is always present, in contact with us, in the exercise of inspection, of beneficence, of instruction.
